Find out why assessment names are bound to their current naming convention

Looking at app/controllers/assessments_controller.rb, the name of an assessment (i.e., assignment) is limited to lowercase letters and numbers. No underscores are allowed. Figure out why. This seems a bit weird. Is it a Rails issue? Or something else? This may require a question to CMU.
